January 15 Already!
Have you spent the holidays celebrating with family and friends, perhaps indulging in your favourite foods, drinks, treats and sweets? Good for you! Don’t feel bad; we should always allow ourselves time to enjoy special occasions with family and friends.
Did your plans to stay active get sidetracked with our terrible month of rain, sleet, ice, snow and freezing cold temperatures? Mine too. The good news is that the days are already getting longer and maybe the worst of this winter is behind us!
So now you’re thinking you’d like to start working on a healthier you and I have a few suggestions to get you started after the holidays.
- Drink more water to prevent dehydration, help with digestion, lubricate the body and assist in moving nutrients. Hydration will also give your liver and kidneys help with waste removal. Aim for 2 litres a day by adding just a bit more liquid today than yesterday. Try different herbal teas, warm water with lemon juice and veggie based soups for variety.
- In the words of Michael Pollan “Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother (or grandmother) wouldn’t recognize as food” which means stick to the perimeter of the grocery store and away from processed “foods”. Yes, it takes a little more planning and preparation but your body will thank you!
- Add a little more activity everyday. start slowly and progressively add more activity until you’re active for 30 minutes 5X weekly. Check out your local recreation centre for classes, aquatics, skating or even just a place to walk indoors. If you’re unsure how to safely add activity, please contact me for a free consultation.
